At IPM, sustainability guides how we develop natural resources, organize production, use energy and make investment decisions. From exploration and production to site rehabilitation and logistics, we plan our activities with a commitment to responsible resource management and environmental stewardship.
Our priorities are to use perlite resources efficiently, reduce the environmental impact of production, advance rehabilitation alongside mining and invest in renewable energy. Developing products that contribute to energy and material efficiency in their applications is also part of this approach.
Perlite resources differ in expansion performance, particle structure, colour and chemical characteristics. Understanding this diversity is essential both to achieving the required product quality and to using available resources efficiently.
We integrate geological mapping, drilling, systematic sampling and digital reserve modelling with production planning. By mapping ore characteristics, we identify distinct quality zones and direct extraction according to the technical requirements of the intended applications. Matching ore selection to its intended use helps limit unnecessary processing and direct different parts of the resource into suitable products.
We continuously carry out exploration and reserve development, updating our production plans accordingly. This allows us to meet current needs while considering the ore qualities and continuity of supply required in the future.
We rehabilitate mining sites in accordance with applicable legislation, environmental obligations and approved rehabilitation plans. Rehabilitation is incorporated into production planning and carried out progressively in areas where extraction has been completed.
In completed areas, we reshape benches and ground surfaces, undertake slope stabilization and revegetate suitable ground. Methods are selected according to the terrain and local site conditions.
We grow plants for rehabilitation at our own facilities through programmes that draw on permaculture principles. Where conventional planting is impractical, we use pelleted seeds in suitable areas. We monitor vegetation development, assess results and carry out maintenance or corrective work where needed.
This approach allows completed areas to be rehabilitated while production continues elsewhere. Regulatory compliance, ground stability and the reestablishment of vegetation suited to local conditions are considered together.
Renewable energy is an important part of our investment approach to reducing the environmental impact of production. Commissioned in 2026, our wind power plant in Bergama generates renewable electricity equivalent to the total electricity consumption of our mining and ore processing operations in Türkiye.
Electricity generated by the plant is supplied to the national grid. We monitor renewable generation and facility consumption separately to assess the balance between production and use.
We consider our wind energy investment alongside energy efficiency improvements at our facilities. While contributing to renewable electricity generation, we also focus on using the energy required for production more efficiently. Together, these areas shape our continuing sustainability investments.
We evaluate production efficiency in relation to energy consumption, usable product output and target quality characteristics. Our aim is to convert ore into products suited to their applications while limiting unnecessary processing and material losses.
Drying, crushing, milling, screening and air classification are managed according to ore characteristics and product specifications. Plant and equipment designs developed within the company help us control process conditions more precisely and reduce the quantity of material falling outside the required specifications.
Investment in milling and classification technologies allows us to utilize different ore characteristics across a broader product portfolio. We assess process improvements not only for their effect on capacity but also for their impact on energy consumption per unit of product, material losses and resource use.
Expansion increases perlite’s volume while substantially reducing its bulk density. Transporting unexpanded ore requires less cargo and storage space than transporting the same quantity of material after expansion.
We transport classified ore prepared in Türkiye to our facilities in Spain, where expanded products are manufactured closer to European points of use. This limits the need to transport bulky finished products over long distances.
The proximity of many of our mining sites to processing facilities reduces ore transport distances. Shipments in large volumes through the Port of Dikili make sea transport a central part of our supply chain.
Shipment planning, vessel chartering, container allocation, warehousing and delivery coordination are managed internally. This structure allows us to coordinate routes, cargo volumes and delivery schedules with transport providers, helping limit unnecessary transfers and cargo movements.
We calculate greenhouse gas emissions annually within defined organizational and reporting boundaries, following Part 1 of ISO 14064, published in 2018, and the GHG Protocol. Activities assessed include ore extraction, transport from quarry to plant, drying, crushing, milling, screening, air classification, packaging, handling and transport to the loading port.
We monitor electricity and fuel consumption, material movements and production efficiency together. These data help us identify emission sources and opportunities for improvement, allowing operational changes to be assessed across the relevant processes.
We prioritize investments that improve resource efficiency, reduce energy consumption, strengthen process control and limit avoidable transport. Progress is tracked through measurable data and used to inform further improvements.
Perlite’s low weight, porous structure and noncombustibility can contribute to energy and material efficiency in different applications. These benefits depend on the selected grade and the design of the system in which it is used.
In construction, expanded perlite is used in lightweight gypsum and plaster formulations, screeds, insulation boards, cavity fills and passive fire protection systems. In appropriately designed building components, it can support thermal insulation and help reduce heating and cooling requirements. Its low density can also reduce the weight of building elements.
In cryogenic applications, perlite limits heat ingress into liquefied gas storage systems, helping maintain the required low temperatures. In agriculture and horticulture, it can improve irrigation management by modifying the aeration, drainage and water retention characteristics of growing media.
Our role in these applications is to supply consistent perlite grades suited to the required performance. By matching product selection to application requirements, we help customers achieve efficient results in their own systems.
We advance our sustainability work through sustained investment and measurable improvements. Renewable energy, responsible resource management, site rehabilitation, efficient production and coordinated logistics are managed as interconnected activities.
As we develop our growth plans, we continue to improve environmental data quality, upgrade production technologies and use natural resources more efficiently. Our aim is to maintain reliable supply and ongoing environmental improvement while addressing the responsibilities that come with mining and production.
