Absorption
Expanded perlite is used as a lightweight mineral absorbent in spill control, sludge solidification, animal bedding, absorbent hygiene products and selected industrial treatment systems.
Its low bulk density and ability to retain liquids make it particularly useful where effective absorption is required without adding excessive weight.
During expansion, perlite develops a porous, multicellular structure with a large internal and external surface area. Liquids are captured within its pores and retained across the irregular particle surfaces, helping contain free liquid or convert it into a more stable and manageable form.
Fine grades of expanded perlite can be blended with sludge and other liquid-bearing waste to support solidification. Its combination of liquid uptake and low density can simplify subsequent handling, storage and transportation while limiting the additional weight associated with heavier mineral absorbents. The appropriate addition rate depends on the volume, viscosity and chemical composition of the liquid, as well as the required condition of the treated material.
In industrial spill control, expanded perlite can absorb oils, water-based fluids, coolants and compatible chemicals. When distributed over a spill, its particles take up the liquid, restrict further spreading and produce a material that can be collected more easily. Its low weight supports convenient transportation, application and removal in factories, workshops, warehouses and maintenance operations. Granular and specially processed forms may also be incorporated into spill-control products and emergency response kits.
Expanded perlite can help manage moisture in animal bedding by absorbing liquid from animal waste and water spillage. This supports a drier bedding environment, reduces wet and compacted areas and can simplify bedding and manure handling. Depending on the housing system and required performance, perlite may be used alone in specialised applications or combined with other bedding materials.
Suitable fine grades may also function as lightweight absorbent or bulking components in multi-layer diapers and feminine hygiene products. Within these formulations, perlite can support liquid distribution, moisture management and weight control. It is generally used alongside fibres, superabsorbent materials and other functional layers rather than as the sole liquid-retention component.
In specialised absorption and treatment columns, selected perlite grades can serve as porous support or absorbent media. Their surface area and low density can promote contact between the treatment medium and the passing liquid. Performance depends on particle size, surface treatment, packing density, flow conditions and the substance being processed, so suitability must be established through application-specific testing.
The correct perlite grade should be selected according to the liquid involved, required absorption performance, particle size, dust level and handling method. Perlite absorbs or retains a substance but does not necessarily neutralise it; consequently, collected material may retain the chemical and safety hazards of the original liquid. Chemical compatibility, worker exposure and disposal requirements must therefore be evaluated for each application.
