Perlite is a natural raw material formed when volcanic glass, originally created by the rapid cooling of lava, becomes hydrated over time. It consists primarily of silicon and aluminum oxides. Its defining characteristic is its ability to expand under controlled heating due to the water held within its structure. When heated rapidly, the glass structure softens and the water turns to steam, increasing the volume of the particles. This transforms the dense ore into a lightweight, cellular material.
The structure formed during expansion gives perlite properties such as low bulk density, thermal insulation and liquid retention. Further processing, including milling and classification, produces different particle sizes and structures suitable for filtration and functional filler applications. Perlite performance depends on both the natural characteristics of the ore and the processing conditions applied.
We manufacture four main groups of perlite products using ore extracted from our own reserves, with processing tailored to the ore characteristics and intended application. Graded & Unexpanded Perlite is prepared by drying, crushing and classifying the ore by particle size. Classic Expanded Perlite is produced through controlled thermal expansion. Classified Expanded Perlite is milled and air classified after expansion to achieve properties suitable for filtration. Advanced Expanded Perlite Products undergo precision milling and air classification to produce functional grades with very fine, controlled particle size distributions.
Integrated control of ore selection and processing conditions enables the production of consistent grades suited to construction, filtration, agriculture and horticulture, foundry applications, cryogenic insulation and functional fillers.
