Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is a porous material produced by activating carbonaceous raw materials. Its extensive internal surface area and pore structure enable it to retain specific compounds through adsorption.

Activated carbon is a highly porous material produced by processing and activating carbonaceous raw materials such as wood, coal and coconut shells. Its extensive internal pore network provides a large surface area on which molecules can be retained. This mechanism is known as adsorption.

As a distributor, we source activated carbon products from manufacturers for use in liquid filtration and purification processes. We offer powdered, granular and extruded grades selected to meet different process requirements for decolorization, reduction of unwanted tastes and odors, and removal of specific dissolved organic compounds.

Manufacturers use physical or chemical activation methods depending on the raw material and target product characteristics. Activation develops the internal pore structure of the carbon, creating adsorption capacity. Milling, classification and, where required, washing are used to adjust particle size and purity characteristics.

In liquid processing, activated carbon primarily works by retaining target compounds on its internal pore surfaces through adsorption. Decolorization also occurs through this mechanism. Depending on the grade and process conditions, activated carbon can reduce substances responsible for color, unwanted tastes and odors, and certain organic impurities. Performance depends on pore size distribution, surface chemistry, particle size, contact time and the properties of the liquid being treated.

Powdered activated carbon is dosed into the liquid directly or as a slurry and allowed sufficient contact time. Following adsorption, the carbon and the compounds it has retained are separated from the liquid by filtration. Where needed, perlite, diatomaceous earth or other filter aids can support carbon retention and efficient filtration.

Granular activated carbon is typically used in fixed beds or adsorption columns through which the liquid passes. Extruded grades may be selected where compatible with the system design. In these applications, particle size, mechanical strength, bed depth and contact time are considered together.

The activated carbon grades we supply are selected for beverage, food, edible oil, chemical and other industrial liquid processing applications. The appropriate grade and dosage are determined according to the target compounds, their concentrations, liquid properties, process conditions and final product purity requirements. Selection is supported by application trials, product specifications and relevant quality documentation.
