Food and Feed

Perlite is used in food processing and animal-feed production as a filtration aid, anti-caking agent, absorbent material and mineral carrier.

Its porous structure provides practical benefits during formulation, processing, storage and handling.

In food production, selected grades support processes requiring efficient solid-liquid separation. The irregular particles create a porous filtration layer that retains suspended solids while allowing the processed liquid to pass through. Perlite may also serve as an absorbent or carrier in suitable formulations, helping incorporate selected liquid ingredients into dry and manageable mixtures.

In animal feed, perlite helps control moisture and reduce the formation of lumps. Its anti-caking effect supports free-flowing feed ingredients, consistent mixing and reliable movement through production, dosing, conveying and packaging equipment.

Perlite can also be used as a carrier for selected liquid or powdered feed components. Its porous particles absorb and distribute these materials throughout the formulation, supporting their incorporation into premixes, concentrates and compound feeds. This can help limit ingredient separation during storage and transportation and maintain a more consistent product texture.

In selected processes, perlite may also provide a mineral support for biocatalytic systems by offering a porous surface on which active components can be distributed or immobilised. The suitability of this function depends on the specific process and formulation.

By improving flowability, moisture management and ingredient distribution, perlite contributes to efficient production and more homogeneous feed mixtures. The appropriate grade must be selected according to particle size, absorption performance, processing conditions and the regulatory requirements applicable to the intended food or feed use.
