Diatomite is a naturally occurring sedimentary rock formed through the accumulation of the silica shells of microscopic algae called diatoms. The distinctive porous structure of these shells gives diatomite its low density and high porosity.
We distribute diatomaceous earth products processed and classified by manufacturers specifically for liquid filtration. These grades are offered to meet the clarity, flow rate and solids retention requirements of different industrial processes.
During processing, manufacturers dry, mill and classify the diatomite. Depending on the target product characteristics, calcination or calcination with an added fluxing agent may also be applied. These thermal treatments promote particle agglomeration and adjust permeability. Processing and classification conditions are controlled to produce grades with different particle size distributions and filtration characteristics.
During filtration, diatomaceous earth particles form a porous filter cake that retains fine suspended solids while allowing the liquid to pass through. Solids retention performance depends on particle structure, particle size distribution and the pore structure of the resulting cake. The appropriate grade is selected to achieve the required balance between clarity and flow rate.
In precoat applications, diatomaceous earth forms a permeable layer on a support surface, such as filter cloth or a metal screen, before filtration begins. This layer reduces the blinding of the support surface by fine solids and facilitates cake removal at the end of the filtration cycle.
In body feed applications, diatomaceous earth is added to the liquid to be filtered. As solids accumulate, it helps maintain the porosity and permeability of the filter cake. Precoat and body feed methods can be used separately or together, depending on process requirements.
The filtration grades we supply are selected for applications in beverage, food, pharmaceutical, chemical and other industrial liquid processing sectors. Grade selection and dosage depend on the liquid’s properties, the concentration and characteristics of suspended solids, target clarity, flow rate and filtration equipment. Suitability for the intended application is assessed against the relevant product specifications and quality documentation.
