Agriculture and Horticulture
Perlite is widely used in commercial agriculture, professional horticulture and soilless cultivation to improve the physical structure of growing media.
Once expanded, it develops a lightweight and porous structure that creates a more balanced environment around plant roots.
When incorporated into soil or growing substrates, expanded perlite creates stable pore spaces that improve aeration and allow excess water to drain more effectively. At the same time, its irregular surfaces retain moisture and dissolved nutrients within the root zone. This balance between air, water and drainage supports healthy root development and helps growers manage irrigation and fertilisation more efficiently.
Expanded perlite can be blended with peat, coir, compost and other substrate components or used as a standalone medium in suitable hydroponic systems. Coarser grades generally provide greater aeration and faster drainage, while finer grades retain more moisture. The growing medium can therefore be adapted to different crops, climates and irrigation methods.
In dense soils, perlite creates spaces that support drainage, aeration and root penetration. In sandy or rapidly draining soils, finer grades can help retain moisture for longer. Because its mineral structure does not readily decompose or compact, perlite can continue to provide these physical benefits over extended growing periods.
Fine perlite is also used in seed-starting mixtures, where it maintains moisture and air around developing roots. In seed coating and pelleting, perlite fines can add bulk, porosity and a controlled surface texture, helping produce seeds with a more uniform and manageable form for handling and mechanical planting.
Suitable grades may also serve as mineral carriers for liquid agricultural ingredients, including crop-protection formulations. In these applications, perlite absorbs and distributes the liquid component while helping the resulting mixture remain dry and free-flowing. Perlite acts as the carrier rather than the active insecticidal or pesticidal ingredient.
Typical applications include potting and growing substrates, soil conditioning, hydroponics, propagation mixtures, seed coating, green roofs and carriers for agricultural formulations. The appropriate grade is selected according to the required balance of aeration, drainage, moisture retention and particle size.
