Functional Fillers

Perlite is used as a functional filler in paints, coatings, adhesives, putties, joint compounds, plasters, sealants, paper, cardboard, plastics and composite materials.

Its porous cellular structure provides high filling volume at a comparatively low weight, allowing it to modify both processing and finished-product properties.

When incorporated into water-based, solvent-based or resin-based formulations, expanded perlite can reduce density and partially replace heavier or more expensive components. This can improve formulation efficiency, control material costs and reduce the weight associated with production, packaging and transportation.

In paints and coatings, finely processed perlite can help control gloss and create matte or textured finishes. Its low density can reduce settling in suitable formulations, while its white mineral appearance may support brightness and pigment extension depending on the required finish.

In adhesives, sealants, caulks, putties and joint compounds, perlite functions as a lightweight filler that can improve workability and reduce overall formulation weight. Its three-dimensional particle structure can also help control shrinkage and cracking during drying or curing while supporting dimensional stability, sanding and finishing.

In plaster formulations, expanded perlite combines lightweight filling with thermal and acoustic insulation. In plastics and composite materials, suitable grades can reduce density, add volume and contribute to insulation, dimensional stability and ease of machining. In paper- and cardboard-based products, selected grades may provide lightweight filling, controlled porosity or absorption, depending on the manufacturing process and intended use.

Perlite fillers are available in different particle sizes, densities and physical forms. Grade selection should reflect the required balance of weight reduction, surface finish, workability, mechanical behaviour and compatibility with the surrounding formulation.
